Bedari, under its project “Citizen Observation for Transparent and Accountable Election 2018” organized Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) with minority councilors in 6 districts of Punjab including Sheikhupura, Nankana Sahib, Toba Tek Singh, Hafizabad, Sahiwal and Vehari. Objective of these FGDs/meetings was to find out the hurdles/issues in voter registration and participation in political process of minority in Pakistan.

Participants of these FGDs shared that a conducive environment is required for active participation of minority in the elections where they could nominate, campaign and vote their candidate without any political, social and religious pressure. They demanded that minorities should have the right of dual voting for effective representation of their community.

The Election commission of Pakistan should bound all the political parties to set a quota for providing party ticket to non-Muslim candidate as now it is being practiced in the case of women. They appreciated the efforts of Bedari for taking minorities on board to ensure their effective participation in the upcoming general elections.
