“The participation of women and girls in healthy activities challenges gender stereotypes and discrimination, and therefore is a vehicle to promote gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls”, said by the principle of Govt. Girl’s High School, District Vehari during the concluding ceremony of the cricket match among girls at this school.

It is observed that, Girls who play sports are more confident, do better academically and are at less risk of diseases and violence. It also help them challenge gender roles especially if they choose a sport affiliated with boys. One of the priorities of Bedari is to uncover trends of participation opportunities for girls in those activities which they cannot do because of being girls. The matter of equity for girls in sports is of significant importance. Therefore, Bedari tried to change this mindset and arranged a cricket match among girls in the school. 267 girls and women participated in this activity. The cricket is normally associated with boys hence selection of this support was to challenge gender roles also.

It was a great idea and participants of the said community cherished this activity a lot. Girls were very happy that they got the opportunity to play cricket. We observed that if women are free to choose activities according to their choice they can shape attitudes towards women’s capabilities as leaders and decision-makers, especially in traditional societies.
