Supporting Transparency, Accountability, and Electoral Processes in Pakistan

Governance is an important issue that affects all the citizens in one way or the other. Bedari has been playing its due role in improving governance in Pakistan. Earlier, Bedari had run a complaint center for earthquake affected people in district Mansehra. The complaints helped in finding the gaps in rehabilitation work. Similarly, Bedari has remained engaged with police department and social welfare department to capacitate them for addressing the problems faced by women survivors of gender-based violence, and to improve the working of the dar-ul-amaan in Chakwal.

Now Bedari has started a comprehensive project to build the capacity of citizen groups to hold the duty bearers accountable. Bedari is implementing this project in 5 constituencies (NA 131, 132, 133, 135 and 137) of districts Sheikhupura and Nankana Sahab with financial and technical support from Free and Fair Elections Network (FAFEN).

Under this project, Bedari would be establishing constituency relations groups (CRG) in the 5 selected constituencies. CRGs are groups of active citizens who would be playing their due role in monitoring the working of government offices at district level. They would identify the problems being faced by citizens, and would plan awareness raising and advocacy initiatives to resolve these problems. Bedari would be providing them basic training in monitoring and reporting the gaps/wrong doings of the government officials to the relevant authorities. Furthermore, following activities would be done to monitor the governance issues in the target districts:

  • Training and capacity building of CRG members,
  • Monitoring of prices of 52 items of everyday use
  • Collection of data from health department on common diseases, functioning of government health facilities, availability of trained staff in the target districts
  • Collection of data on crimes and courts, and monitoring of police stations,
  • Collection of data about educational facilities in the target districts

It is a two-year long project. We believe that it would go a long way in improving governance in the target districts in particular and in Pakistan in general
