Bedari team organized full day training with Police officials on Child Marriage law at Police Headquarter, Lahore. The training aimed at raising the sensitivity of police officials on child marriage law, highlighting their role as police officials and discussing the challenges police faces while addressing such case. 87 police officials attended the training. According to Punjab’s law the minimum age for girl to be married is 16 years while for boy its 18 years, which itself is a discrimination. However, role of police to implement this law was discussed intensively. It was emphasized that the police department is one of the major institutions of any state. Government can implement any rule and law only if police take it serious and owns it.

Police department shared few challenges they face while playing their part in combatting child marriage. They stated the demand of more training for them to be conducted often for their capacity building. Moreover, they told that the department is politicized. Whenever they try to stop such acts, they face political interventions and have to withdraw from the case. Another issue was lack of IEC material or regulating literature on new passed laws and protection centers. Despite of all these issues, they ensured their complete cooperation to bring an end to child marriages.
