Self Growth Program


5D_Self_GrowthSelf-growth program consists of 10 to 12 sessions spread over as many weeks. It is a deliberate decision to hold one session per week as it provides the participants time to apply their learning from one session in their practical life and come back with their experiences, impressions and feedback. These sessions are held with men and women. A session is usually 3 hours long. Following topics are covered in the Self-Growth sessions:

  • Introduction, Setting the Norms, Sharing Fears and Expectations,
  • Exploring One’s Strengths and Weaknesses
  • Gender and Sex; Gender Roles, Patriarchy
  • Identities and Stereotypes – Expanding Tolerance
  • Effective Listening, Empathy and Sympathy
  • Communication skills – Verbal and Non Verbal
  • Negotiation skills
  • Aggressive Behavior versus Assertive Behavior; Importance of Feedback, Giving/Receiving Feedback
  • Dealing with Sexual Issues/Crimes
  • Setting the Targets for Oneself; Developing One’s own Objectives
  • Challenging Patriarchy, Drawing Lifeline
  • Reflection

It is not an exhaustive list of the topics. The trainer has the option to change the content as per the feedback received from the participants. He/she may add something or leave out. Similarly, the trainer and the participants can choose the order of the topics.

Outcomes/Benefits

The sessions have been found highly beneficial to the participants. They:

  • Learn to communicate assertively
  • Assert themselves without being aggressive or without offending anyone
  • Challenge stereotypes
  • Gain confidence
  • Learn to respect themselves and others as human beings
  • Know their own weaknesses and strengths
  • Learn to negotiate

These sessions are highly popular among youth especially among females. Bedari has always received very good feedback from the participants. These sessions transform them. The submissive and quiet ones start talking and expressing themselves, and negotiating with their parents and other family members.

I have attended two Self-Growth Sessions. I have learnt how to be assertive without being offensive and how to negotiate with people. I loved that, and would make sure that I do not miss any of these sessions, these are so useful. It was an eye opening training experience. I have never felt so good about myself like this before. I was able to reflect on my strengths and it makes me feel good. I have made several new close friends due to this training. Many of my friends feel the same way. My family already thinks that my communication skills and my confidence have greatly improved.
